May 18th Message
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This would have been our last full day of school. It has been wonderful teaching you this semester. It has definitely been a different type of year. I hope all of you have a wonderful summer break. Be safe, be nice, and make good choices. You can still turn in assignments until Wednesday morning. I hope we can all get back to a normal school in the fall. I miss seeing your faces.
Cheers to the end of the year!
Ms. Echols

World War II Propaganda through comic books
Most, if not all, of you have seen some of the Marvel movies and know about Captain America. He started as a comic book during the World War II era. Check out these old comic book covers and see how they can be used as propaganda (advertising that makes you feel a certain way)
If you get bored, you can watch "Captain America" on Disney plus and think about the connections between the Nazis and Hydra. Heck, keep going and watch Star Wars and think about how "The Empire" could be an an allegory (super-extended metaphor) of the World War period. Stormtroopers were originally part of the German military in WWI.
Anyway, below is your assignment. Have fun!

World War II - Timeline and movie clips
Yet again, World War broke out in Europe first (1939) and the United States joined later (1941).
For today's lesson, review the World War II events of World War II from the power point at the end of today's entry. Then watch the video clips from various films.
There are tons and tons of really good World War II movies out there. Check out these movie clips, representing various battles and events of the war. Just be aware, some are really bloody and the events are tragic.
Darkest Hour: Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of Great Britain) on the phone with Franklin Roosevelt, asking for supplies from the Cash and Carry and Lend/Lease Acts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo4U1SqnRpA
Pearl Harbor: Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor scene. This is the event that ultimately got the United States involved in the War. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pmup_nTlXM
D-day: Saving Private Ryan, Omaha Beach scene . The re-invasion of mainland Europe by the Allies in Normandy, France. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmiphUYwL_0&t=286s&has_verified=1
Atomic bomb on Hiroshima: The event that ended the War in the Pacific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxWNAM8Cso
If you want, there are currently several films and documentaries on World War II on Netflix. Some are rated R, so get parent permission. Many of them include violence and extremely sad and upsetting events. There are many documentaries as well.

World War II
Last week you learned about World War I and the Treaty of Versailles. In the end, Great Britain and France wanted to avoid another war at all costs. They had lost most of a generation of young men, and they did not want to loose anymore. Germany was blamed for World War I and the Treaty of Versailles punished Germany a LOT. Germany had to pay for the whole war, but there is no way to pay for the loss of an entire generation. Germany then got a charismatic leader who promised to throw out the Treaty and make Germany strong again. Hitler then allied with other leaders similar to himself. Germany, Italy, and Japan then started taking over other territories. These acts of aggression led to World War II.
Check out the two power points below for more information!

World War I movie clips and Treaty of Versailles
Below are links to movie clips that demonstrate what World War I and trench warfare was like.
War Horse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A136W6br_0 - this is a really good movie that follows a horse from the start to end of the war. It is on Netflix right now. This scene shows the trenches and trying to cross no man's land.
Then again, crossing No Man's Land is no problem when you're a Wonder Woman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJCgeOAKXyg *not based on actual events
And since you know I love some songs. There is a Swedish heavy metal band called "Sabaton" who has a whole album call "Great War" and all the songs are based on WWI events. Like this one: Fields of Verdun.
Anyway, the war ended with the Treaty of Versailles (remember Louis XIV's crazy cool house). It was a terrible and unfair treaty that led to World War II and the redrawing of boundaries, not just in Europe but the Middle East as well. Review the power point below to find out just how unfair the treaty was.

World War I
The First World War, also known as The Great War, lasted from 1914-1918. It completely changed European boundaries and history in extraordinary ways. The ideas of the Industrial Revolution were applied to the battlefield. Just as machines made it easier to make cloth and quicker communications, technologies of the war (machine guns, poison gas, tanks, long range mortars) allowed for killing on a scale previously unknown.
Review the power point below for the causes, timeline, and impact of World War I.

Imperialism - Taking over the World
In order to keep "feeding the machines" and have the factories running, Europe (and later the United States and Japan) needed raw materials -- so they started taking over the world. Great Britain was really good at taking over the world because they had a head start because they were already industrialized. Since North and South America were already independent of the European powers, it left Asia and Africa to be carved up.
Your lesson today is the webquest on Imperialism in Africa below. You can use this link to get to the website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/abolition/scramble_for_africa_article_01.shtml

Capitalism and Communism
Remember your town from yesterday and how life was not fun for most of the people living in it? A guy came along with an idea of how to make life better for the common worker. His name is Karl Marx. His ideas let to 2 competing economic and government practices: Capitalism and Communism. You might as well learn about these now, because they come back to haunt you next year in US History (there is an almost war about it for like 46 years) and then Senior year in Economics, because, well, they are economics systems.
For today's lesson, please review the power point below and check out this video that demonstrates different economic systems with cows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIPDJ1Cc_uw&t=86s

Industrialization and Urbanization
I am sad that I can't be here with you today for this lesson. It is one of my favorites. However, Mr. Ridgeway has already made a video, so just pretend he is me.
For today's lesson, you will need: 1 piece of paper, a pencil, and an eraser. He says you need poster board. but he probably made this before everybody was stuck inside and the Dollar Store was closed.
Follow his instructions to create a town during the Industrial Revolution. It will go fast, that is the point. Your town may be ugly and crowded, that is also the point. There is a cheat sheet at the bottom of today's entry, just in case you need one.
So, get your supplies and start watching Mr. Ridgeway and "The Urban Game": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POzIuT1vTOY
After you are done creating an urban, industrialized town, please answer the following question in complete sentences.
1. Would you want to live in that town? Why or why not.
I would also love a picture of your town.

Industrial Revolution or Rise of the Machines!!!
In the late 1700-early 1900s, the world went through a period of Industrialization, when people started getting machines to do their work for them. It all began in Great Britain in the textile manufacturing. It then spread to other industries, creating a world that is more recognizable to us today.

Since you all know I love history so much, here is a story now that you know about the French Revolution:
Bastille Day is July 14th, and my birthday is July 15th. My 23rd birthday was French Revolution themed and my mom, indulgent to my nerdy ways, made me a Louis XVI with a guillotine cake.
