The 1960s was a period of change, and many of the changes can still be seen today. The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing, with peaceful protests by Martin Luther King, Jr. and other organizations. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 made segregation illegal and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 did away with many of the voting restrictions for African Americans, making the 15th Amendment finally achievable. Cesar Chavez rose to help the migrant Mexican farm workers.
In addition, President Lyndon Johnson promoted the "Great Society" and "War on Poverty." He helped establish new programs like free school lunches, medical care for the poor and elderly, and improving urban life. It was sort of like FDR's New Deal Programs, just taking things a step further.
Below are the readings and questions to complete, with more information about these topics.

World War II Propaganda through comic books
Most, if not all, of you have seen some of the Marvel movies and know about Captain America. He started as a comic book during the World War II era. Check out these old comic book covers and see how they can be used as propaganda (advertising that makes you feel a certain way)
If you get bored, you can watch "Captain America" on Disney plus and think about the connections between the Nazis and Hydra. Heck, keep going and watch Star Wars and think about how "The Empire" could be an an allegory (super-extended metaphor) of the World War period. Stormtroopers were originally part of the German military in WWI.
Anyway, below is your assignment. Have fun!

Wednesday - April 22st
There are tons and tons of really good World War II movies out there. Check out these movie clips, representing various battles and events of the war. Just be aware, some are really bloody and the events are tragic.
Darkest Hour: Winston Churchill (Prime Minister of Great Britain) on the phone with Franklin Roosevelt, asking for supplies from the Cash and Carry and Lend/Lease Acts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wo4U1SqnRpA
Pearl Harbor: Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor scene. This is the event that ultimately got the United States involved in the War. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pmup_nTlXM
D-day: Saving Private Ryan, Omaha Beach scene . The re-invasion of mainland Europe by the Allies in Normandy, France. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmiphUYwL_0&t=286s&has_verified=1
Atomic bomb on Hiroshima: The event that ended the War in the Pacific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxWNAM8Cso
If you want, there are currently several films and documentaries on World War II on Netflix. I recently watched "The Photographer of Mauthausen" and "Defiance." Mauthausen is about a concentration camp and Defiance is about a group of Jewish refugees hiding in the Belarussian forest. Both are good, but are intense and extremely sad because of their holocaust themes.
